Webster's New Universal Unabridged Dictionary defines an oubliette as-
a concealed dungeon with a trap door at the top as its only opening, formerly used for persons condemned to perpetual imprisonment or to perish secretly
According to Hoggle in the movie Labyrinth "It's a place you put people to forget about 'em"
Like so many other housewives my age I've found the adjustment to be very traumatic. I love my children and I wouldn't want it any other way. Still sometimes there is a sense that Crystal is disappearing and being replaced by this terribly dull "Mama" person.
As I fold the laundry I remember that I used to be a bellydancer.
As I put away the dishes I remember that I used to be an actress, sometimes on stage even.
As I change diapers I remember that I used to be a writer
As I take out the trash I remember that I used to be an artist.
I didn't do any of those things professionally, but I did them openly, passionately and uniquely. You are what you do, and at times all I do is drudgery.
It's at these times that I feel trapped in suburban obscurity- condemned to perpetual imprisonment or to perish secretly.
